Every day Civility

reflections on communication, mediation, and democracy

This blog springs from over thirty interviews I conducted with mediators for a research project through the University of Washington.  There are many insights to glean from mediators wrestling with how to serve, support, intervene, facilitate, and transform conflict.  In this blog, I explore how to harness the power of communication and mediation in the little conversations that make up everyday life.

My hope is that this blog will be both invitation and spark to all kinds of dialogue about civility in different contexts.  I welcome your insights, resources, and ideas on the search for common ground, and how to unlock communication processes that foster mutuality, kindness, tolerance, and inclusion.

I develop people as a dispute resolution professional, certified through the King County Dispute Resolution Center (KCDRC) in Seattle, Washington, serving as a mentor mediator for practicum students training for mediation certification, a lead mediator in King County District Court, and a community mediator for the KCDRC.  I coach mediation trainings, including for the KCDRC, the University of Washington School of Law Mediation Clinic, and Seattle University School of Law Dispute Resolution Clinic.  I teach a range of communication courses including Communication in Small Groups, Conflict and Cooperation, Gender and Communication, and Persuasion, most recently for the Department of Communication at the University of Washington.   Currently, I work as a consultant for the University of Washington Consulting Alliance (UWCA).  For more information about my role with the UWCA see my profile: http://hr.uw.edu/pod/consultant/gaye-bammert/.

I look forward to your feedback. Let’s move civil conversations forward.
